Iranian presidential elections

The 10th Iranian presidential elections will be held on 12th June, 2009. With Mahmoud Ahmadinejad being the current incumbent and Mohammad Khatami giving him a stiff competition, the elections this year are poised to be full of suspense and might offer a few surprise names popping up on the Iranian political directory. Mohammad Khatami, who has been the president of the country before is said to be a strong advocate of the fact that Iran should bolster good relations with the West.
There are some other lesser-known names which were also seen as possible contenders for the supreme office. Mir-Hossein Mousavi, a painter and former Prime Minister of Iran, is one such name. It was during an exhibition of Mousavi’s paintings in 2008, that he was quoted by a newspaper as being interested in the candidature. Mousavi was the main contender against Ahmadinejad three years ago, which resulted in the latter’s win at the end.

Iranian presidential elections will be very popular this year. I am sure we will see lots of interviews and talk shows related to them. And that’s not a bad thing.
